teaching children to pray

I like to pray. I do. I pray for my husband and our extended family.  I’ve been praying for my children for years. But now that my daughter is here…how do I teach her to pray??

I almost feel a little guilty that she’s 6 months old and we don’t pray together. Hubby & I each say prayers OVER her every night, but I feel like we should be saying prayers WITH her.  Even though she’s not old enough to really understand, she will start catching on. Right?

How do you teach your children to pray? What are some good mealtime & bedtime prayers to do with children? Advice on kids first prayers?

wordless wednesday: pulling up

the breastfeeding man

{Disclaimer…I vent here and may not be my happy, cheerful, typical self}

Yesterday was one of those days where I had to hold back the mama bear claws. I had to take Munchkin in to the pediatrician to check her belly b/c of some “pooping issues”. Our pediatrican has 5 partners, so you can see any of the doctors at any time, or can choose to see just one or two.  Well, I’m a pretty picky doctor person, so I picked one that I like and only see her.  Having to make a last minute appointment yesterday, they booked me with a random doctor.

Enter the breastfeeding natzi.

Ummmm, did I mention HE is a MAN?!?!

Yeah.

the mommy break room

I go through ups and downs as a mommy.  Ups, where I feel terrific, could parent all day and night. Where nothing wears me down.  Then I hit a low. Where if I have to do one more load of laundry, or change one more poopy diaper, I think my head might explode.  We’ve all been there, right? {I’m just not going to act like I never get tired like some of you crazy people}

If I don’t take a BREAK, I fear for the outcome. I might lash out on my husband, or not do laundry for 2 weeks {wait, I already do that…the laundry part, not the lashing part}. It’s not my hubby’s fault that I get exhausted, but bless his heart…he’s the other adult in the house. Living with a hormonal woman.  Like I said, bless his heart.

six months old

I have been writing monthly letters to my daughter to put in her first year book, and I hadn’t shared any of those yet with my you. But since we are 6 months old today, I thought it would be fun to share her 6 month pictures and the letter for her book.

Warning — the cuteness of the kid pictured below may be too overwhelming for your eyes and just might burn your retinas. It’s just almost too much to handle. But don’t say I didn’t warn you. {And, click on any picture to view it in it’s full-sized yummy-ness} You’re welcome.

My Sweet Girl  -

You are 6 months old! Wow, the time has flown and it makes me a little sad that we are already halfway to your first birthday. I absolutely love this stage we are in, and wish I could freeze time and stay here a bit longer with you. That just wouldn’t suit you though, you are ready to go. You want to be big. You try to prove to me everyday that you are a big, independent girl while I try to keep you my tiny baby.

It’s an absolute joy and honor to be your mom.

I know that I am a better person because of you and how you have changed me.  I look at the world differently, and I appreciate life as the precious gift that it is.  I hold you close to me to feel your heart beating and praise God that he built you perfectly, in His image and for me.

It makes my heart melt as you reach for me now because you want to be in your mama’s arms. The place you feel safe, your whole world.  You teach me about trust and faith.  I am so thankful for the ways I learn from you, and how I love more deeply and passionately because of what you are to me.

You are hilarious.  The spunky personality you have brings so much laughter and joy to our home.  You are learning to crawl, but have figured out you can scoot all over the house. Everything is an exciting adventure for you, and you love being semi-mobile.

I hope you always keep that adventurous spirit. You little strong willed one, I pray that you stay just the way you are. That you focus that passion into good, because you can take on the world.

I’m so excited about what the month ahead hold for us. I know you are going to change so much, and I’m bracing myself for the wild ride you are about to take us on.

I love you, baby girl. Happy 1/2 Birthday!

-Mommy

my favorite things: 3-6 months

It’s time for my favorite things 3-6 months addition. Yikes. That means my baby is 6 months and that makes me incredibly sad. It didn’t really hit me until I got that Baby Center e-mail saying “you’re halfway to your baby’s 1st birthday”. Then the waterworks started. Guess I better get to planning that birthday party huh?

Well, for now let’s focus on turning 6 months. So here’s my list of things that helped us survive 3-6 months. You can also look back at my favorite things 0-3 months.

1.  Sophie the Giraffe – aka “Jeffery” as he’s known in our house. The moment she started teething (at 14 weeks when the first tooth popped through), that thing went in the mouth. It’s baby crack.

2. High Chair – We got the Fisher Price Space Saver, and love it! It attaches to a chair so it doesn’t take up extra space (uh, duh…space saver). It also turns into a booster seat when she’s bigger.

3. Maclaren Stroller – This has become my third arm. Once she got a little too heavy for me to carry around in the carseat, and especially after transferring her into her big girl car seat this was the best purchase!

wordless wednesday: the bow

make your own babyfood

Making your own homemade babyfood is super duper easy, and so great for your baby! I hear a lot of moms say they just don’t have time, or the supplies. So I am here to show you how easy it is, and you don’t need fancy machines.

I’ll show you here how to make carrots & squash. These are great first foods.

Step 1 – Buy fruits, veggies and meats on a normal trip to the store or farmers market. We buy everything we can organic so we know there haven’t been chemicals added.

Step 2 - Wash, peel & chop into small pieces.

Step 3 – Cook & Drain. Usually around 20 minutes, I just turn them on and go play with the kiddo or do some dishes while she naps. Then once they are soft, they are done. Let them cool a bit.
